Diary Account Of Our Editing

On the first day, we were getting introduced to the new macs and were everything is and learning the basics about first pro cut and other softwares like indesign. We learnt about photoshop even though we already knew how it worked before in first year of media. I was really nervous on the first day, so nervous that I deleted our work on the mac but we got it back in the end which fustrated me even more.

What did I learn about photoshop?
  • I learnt how to put two layers, one layer for the picture, another onw for the background.
  • I coloured the writing which I already knew but didnt tremember where the icons were
  • I was able to place text around the picture
  • I learnt to cut the picture

What did I learn about Indesign?
  • I learnt that indesign is mainly used for logos.
  • I used indesign to design the title for the magazine.
  • learnt how to set up a msater page
First day of editing: we done a minute of the editing. It was really hard editing on this day because we were not aware of how hard the software was however we overcome this problem by asking the teacher to help us with the basics. From just this lesson on the basics of film pro, we were able to cut part of sequences and put them in the order that we want. On this day, we tried to learn how to put in the writing on top of the film and how it can be continuous.

I would say that this day was really frustrating because we wanted to learn everything in the short time we had but we got over it by learning a few things.
So we learnt the following that day:
How to place text on the film
How to make the text crawl
How to cut the sequence
How to add colour onto the text

The next day of editing, we were trying to edit the main part of the documentary which is the interview. The
interview was really hard because we had to cut out information that was going to be useful and the information that we will not need. The interview was 30minutes so as a group we had to discuss what kind of conventions we would want our audeineces to watch so we decided that the interview should be back to back of the psychiatrist and Naomi.

Diary account of Filming

We done all our filming in one day because we wanted to have all the action happening at once instead of cutting the action down into pieces.

We filmed mainly the interview again because that is what need alot of work and corrections, so to gain good marks, we made sure that the lightning was better than the lightning used in the previous interview. The interview took place against pictures of sixth formers to represent david's age group and also to gain a wider audience for our documentary.

On this day, David was bubbly and full of confidence as he was able to get infront of the camera and show the world the journey he went through and who supported him.

Why Did We Change Our Documentary

From the feedback we received, we decided to change our documentary.

The reasons were that the lighting of the interview room was not very professional becuase at one point, the walls were washed in green and then at another point the walls looked creame. So the lighting was not consistent to what we wanted and we could not film Naomi again as we were running out of time.

Also, from the teachers feedback we instantly knew that the documentary was not what they had expected or had in mind. Although, Miss Garty said that "it was better than i thought it would be", however she had some major concerns which we could not change from just editing. We had to film it again.

The documentary was not flowing, it was jumping from one sequence from another so it did not make any sense. Also, we were having more ideas in how we could change it and this meant that we would have to film the whole documentary over again except from the psychiatrists interview which we thought was exceptionally good.

The back to back of psychiatrist and the person suffering from schizophrenia is really good but I do not like beginning because the pictures are not clearer so degrading your overall marks.

The documentary is good because you followed most of the conventions of a documentary but you need to work on the text because you cannot see it properly"

Kerry

Its good, yeah its really good compared to ours (laughs)....Okay am going to be honest, I think that you did not really look at documentaries before you started your filming. It looks rushed and you never took time to plan your work.
Ainsley

"Its better than I thought it was going to be because you have not showed me anything at all so I can have an idea where your at. Also you need to take your own pictures at the beginning and you need to watch Sara's documentary and see how they really took time and care when producing such fine piece of work"

Miss Garty

Errmm, I think you guys can do much better than this. I don’t know what to say but all I have to say is that you need to make it flow because right now it seems to be jumping from one sequence to another".
Miss Hackum

Guys you need alot of work and there is not enough time right now. You need to take your own pictures at the beginning and the lightning and text need work as well"

I think it is okay however it needs a lot of work. The lighting of the interview changes so much that it strains your eyes and you get bored of it too easily. I think that you should cut down the interview and add pictures or a video of the schizophrenic to easy away the bad lightning

Diary Account Of Our Filming

We done all of our filming on red nose day. The reason why we chose to film on that day is because it was the time last year that she was diagnoised with schizophrenia. So filming on this day was really hard because we did not really grasp the whole concept of why we were filming. We had an idea in our heads that we will go around the whole school and film students doing different activities and it will show that Naomi is involved in school activities, however it was hard to bring that idea to life.

When we first started, we told Naomi to introduce herself to the camera so the audeince knows who she is so she will be acting as a narrator and at the same time the patient with schizophrenia but then we thought about it and clocked that we have not really seen documents that do that. So we moved to another idea and that is that we will film Naomi, getting involved in school activities and pretending that the camera is not reallly there. I would say that the concept did not work very well so we just told her to hang around with her friends while we film her.

This was a really good idea and from there we moved the filming to an interview room. The room was painted white with green chairs and a table in the middle, which followed the conventions of how an interview room looks like. The interview went smoothly and our interviewer was a teacher.

After the interview, we filmed some teachers on what red nose day means to them. Later on we filmed my psychologist teacher who acted like a psychiatrist at the school and she was talking about the symptoms of schizophrenia and the diagnosis of the illness.

Overall, I had a fun day filming on this day and it was enjoyable to see soo many people getting involved on this day.

Diary account Of Editing

I was working mainly on the interview because it was the main part of the documentary compared to the other sequences. We altered the interview with David and added other parts for example the stiloets to make it much more believable to the audience.
Editing the interview was much more easier this time because we had gained much more knowledge than the previous documentary that we had filmed with Naomi Raffington.
The knowledge and improvements that we had gained using the software were:
  • The knowledge and improvements that we had gained using the software were:
  • To be able to make a freeze frame (shift+n)
  • Zoom in on a picture whilst the video is playing
  • Make a sequence of David talking about what people think when the word “schizophrenia” comes to mind
  • We were able to produce our own pictures from
  • Tidy up the sound to make it easier for the audience to hear
  • Change the text because before it was not visible
As we haven’t used the editing software on the computer for a while when we first started to edit it was only the basic that I knew and had to tell the rest of the group, but as we got future into it things started to come back to us and we were then able to edit to our highest abilities.

To make sure that we all took it in turns to edit and knew how two use the software we divided it into different sections that they would edit but talking to the rest of the group the whole time to make sure that we all agreed with what was being done.

As I designed the opening titles I asked the group if I could edit them. To do the edit the opening titles was tricky at first as there is many different layers to the video footage to add at the same time, after I got all the footage on the timeline I then started to add the footage onto the same screen as there would be three different moving video footage going on the screen at the same time. I then resized them and added a black background with white text to make them stand out.

Then it was ready to add the music that I got from youtube videos and edited it to final cut and placed in in different areas that was needed.  I put in Adele someone like youb instrumental for the interview and for the opening sequence, I used AK beats. I used AK beats because its catchy and funky which makes it lively for the audience.

While we were adding we where always checking to see whether everything was relevant towards are target audience a prime example of this is the voxpops. As are target audience is mainly the older generation we had to make sure that the music reflected what the documentary was going to be all about and also some of the things weren’t suitable because of the storyline so the documentary would be after 9' oclock.
